The Power of Marketing

With the establishment of an open economy, the whole world has become a giant market. Marketing is the omnipotence factor within this huge establishment and it’s over modern society is one aspect that has been much debated over by social scientists. Most of the ideal of today’s society has been set by the marketing strategies of commercial companies. It is they who dictate what is beautiful, what is desirable, and in fact what is the ideal in every aspect of life. And the tragic part is that while the companies begin to dictate our lives they are only interested in increasing sales and views consumers as only a means to an end. But unfortunately we are tricked by this.

The way a product is marketed increases its appeal and desirability. Advertisement is just one aspect of marketing. Extravagant product launches that gain extensive media coverage is another. Celebrities are hired to increase the glamour of such events and make the consumer interested in the new thing that is being introduced in the market. The presence of a celebrity makes an ordinary thing seem more precious.

Companies often resort to such tactics in order to sell products that they know is not very different from things already being sold. Next comes packaging.

The most mundane things are packed in such way that they look like exclusive products. The thing inside might not even be anything particularly brilliant but the bottle or the case makes it look so.

Prices are often set not keeping the actual product in mind but inclusive of everything else. We do not realize this, but it is we consumers who are paying for the marketing strategy of every product.

The price of the product includes the cost of the advertisement campaigns, the launches and the packaging. We are in reality paying for all of the things which are manipulating us into buying the product in the first place. One has to appreciate the strategies of the modern market where the consumer is made the scapegoat every time.

In order to prevent ourselves from being used, the consumer first and foremost must be aware of the ways in which the market works. Awareness of commercial politics can help one to steer clear of getting used by them. Realize that the product which looks most attractive might not be the best. Learn to make your own choices. Do not buy things blindly, use your mind to make the correct decisions and you will get the right value for your money.
